Minutiae - 32 1/2" WX321/2"H ($250)

“Minutiae” is a nod to traditional quilt block construction with its use of the very cheerful fabrics of the 1930’s. These fabrics, wildly popular and ironically cheerful, belied the poverty and stress of the Great Depression and the quilters who used them. While I did use straight lines in this quilt I did try to create blocks that looked unconventional and groped at various sides of their borders. I hand quilted almost obsessively all over the fabrics, creating new patterns and trails. This repetition of stitches is an acknowledgement of the obsessive nature of women’s domestic lives. Ask any woman how many times she has wiped down the kitchen counters or loaded the washing machine…. it is the minutiae of our daily lives, repeated over and over again.
